welcome home.
Caylen Monroe is a multidisciplinary artist. As a figurative painter, muralist, and emerging installation artist- they’re interested in art-making as a form of storytelling and an act of community care. Through a maximalist approach to colour, their practice aims to facilitate spaces of rest, playfulness, and queer joy.
Their earlier works are primarily figurative paintings that were used as explorations of different states of the human experience. They decided it was time to take the ethereal dream worlds that they built in their oil paintings and early works, and invite them into the real world. In their current practice, conceptually they are interested in exploring placemaking and specifically the importance of the feeling of home. Their expansion into installation art is rooted in the desire to create centralized spaces of belonging for the queer community.
In both their abstract imagery, and figurative painting, there is an underlying interest in organic forms and colourful compositions. Moving forwards in their practice, they're looking to engage in larger scale, immersive projects that allow them to create whimsical spaces that offer solace for the queer and trans community.
